Ergonomic Excellence

When a Garden City couple needed a kitchen that fit their life style and pre existing floor plan Douglas Kitchens set out to defy the misconceptions of space limitations with ergonomic elegance.

"The home owner's wanted a bright and airy traditional look that flowed seamlessly with the two connecting rooms, incorporating furniture like detailing. They also need to maximize their storage capacity while working within the pre existing floor plans. "The biggest challenge," Doug Walsh, CKD says "was working around the window which was slightly off center. I needed the cabinetry that flanked the window to look balanced. With that wall set, the rest of the cabinetry took shape."

They opted for an Irpinia cabinet which filled the need for custom flexibility while satisfying the client's appetite for furniture caliber beauty. MDF doors also eliminated the shrinking and cracking risk factor commonly found with painted wood, making them ideal for intricately detailed painted cabinetry. Pilasters with integral door panels were used to bookend the cabinetry and mimic the door fronts. Identical panels were also used on every accepting appliance to keep up with the overall traditional furniture like appearance. The same detailing was followed through at the base of the cabinetry with sculptured furniture toe kicks and applied moldings. Arch valances grace the range, sink and oven areas adding interest while softening the lines. Finally, crown molding at the top of the cabinets flows uninterrupted throughout the kitchen and the adjourning two rooms to pull the entire space together.

To meet the couple's storage needs frameless, full access construction cabinets were used allowing for optimal storage capacity with a seamless look. The cabinetry is fully equipped with 90 degree pull-out corner cabinets, lazy Susans, drawer dividers, waste storage, a customized appliance garage and cutlery and roll out trays ensuring that everything has a space and no space is wasted.
